| This small treatise is amongst the many works of the renowned Hanbali jurist, Muwaffaq al-Din Ibn Qudama al-Maqdisi (d. 620/1223), in defence of the traditional Islamic doctrines, and censure of speculative theology known as ‘ilm al-kalam, and its partisans, namely the Mu'tazilis and the Ash'aris. This particular treatise comes as a violent attack on one of the prominent members of his own school, Abu al-Wafa ‘Ali b. ‘Aqil al-Hanbali (d. 513/1119), who was heavily influenced by the rationalist movement in his formulative years. | Indeed Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah, may Allah's mercy be upon all of them, are upon the doctrine that Allah Himself rose over His throne and is high above all His creation. No one differs with such except one whose sight has been blinded from amongst the Jahmiyyah, Mu'tazilah, and others from the deviant sects who have abandoned the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet, and ruled by their desires and the opinions of their teachers.
